Derek Bridge (Staff 1948-1986)

It is with great sadness that we learnt of the death of Derek Bridge on 13th March 2012. Derek served on the staff at Sherborne between 1948 and 1986 and was Housemaster of Harper House for a full fifteen year term between 1959 and 1974.

There will be a memorial service to celebrate Derek’s life in Sherborne Abbey on the afternoon of Friday 18th May 2012 at 2.30 with refreshments afterwards in the Powell Theatre.  All will be most welcome.

For those who did not know Derek, here is a bit of background

Derek J W Bridge joined the staff at Sherborne in 1948 and served on the staff until his retirement in 1986. He had attended Hertford College, Oxford, and soon after arriving at Sherborne captained the Dorset County Cricket side in 1949.  He was a lifelong member of the cricket club, being Secretary between 1978-92 and then President in 1989.  He also received a rugby blue at Oxford and played for the Barbarians, making the reserves bench for England. He only failed to get a cap because the player picked ahead of him recovered from flu in time!

He was housemaster of Harper House from 1959 until 1974, taking over from John Melvin and succeeded by Tony Rouse. He was master-in-charge of cricket for a long period in the 1960’s and 1970’s and also coached the 1st XV rugby team. He was married to Sheila who died in March 2011 which was soon after they moved to Mid Wales to be close to the family, having lived in Tinney’s Lane, Sherborne since retirement. They could often be seen on the Upper watching cricket from their car until about three years ago.”

During both his time on the staff and in retirement, Derek was a fantastic supporter of Sherborne.
